The average American is only productive for one-fourth of their workday.

Current work schedules, the traditional nine-to-five, were not designed around the way the human brain works.

Because of this, most people find themselves spending a good portion of their work time running down the clock and not getting much done.

That said, there are a few easy steps you can make to help keep yourself and your coworkers productive.

Here are a few tips to help you improve efficiency and boost your productivity at work.

Learn to Prioritize by Time

When it comes to prioritizing, it can be tempting to put the largest and most important projects before everything else. But, that’s not the most efficient way to work.

When it comes to creating a task list for the day, you should consider the amount of time that has to go into each job above all else.

Before you start work, you should go through your to-do list and figure out how long it will take to complete each task individually. Then, go through that list and take care of all the easy projects one by one.

By knocking short and easy tasks out early on, you free up the majority of your day to focus on long-term projects.

Take It One Task at a Time

Multi-tasking may seem like the key to efficiency, but it can be more of a hindrance than a help.

When you take on too many tasks at the same time, you are more likely to make simple mistakes that you’ll have to waste time going back and fixing later.

By taking your day one task at a time and by giving those tasks your undivided attention, you’ll be able to give your productivity a boost and achieve more.

While we like to pile on the work and try to scramble through as much as we can every day, our minds work better when we slow down and focus.

Have the Right Tools

You can’t expect yourself to be able to build a bridge if you don’t have a hammer.

When your team doesn’t have access to the right tools to complete their jobs, they won’t be able to get all that much done. A productive workspace provides its employees with all of the tools they need to complete their assigned tasks.

The organization of that workspace is also essential as it allows workers to find and access these tools quickly and efficiently.

Whether your team needs casters or graphic design software, you should make sure they have all the tools they need to complete their tasks.

Don’t Forget to Take Breaks

The human mind isn’t designed to focus on one task indefinitely.

We’re easily distracted and like to focus on several tasks all at the same time — all things that are highly detrimental to our productivity.

If you try to buckle down and power through an eight hour day, you’ll get less done than if you allowed yourself a few short breaks.

The majority of people can not maintain sustained attention for more than two hours. After that amount of time, you’ll need a 20-30 minute break.

If you do not give yourself a couple of breaks during your day, your productivity could decrease dramatically.

How to Improve Efficiency

Getting the most out of your eight hour work day doesn’t mean chaining yourself to your desk. By following these tips, you’ll be able to improve efficiency and up your company’s productivity in no time.
