Seattle, WA, May 26, 2019 --(PR.com)-- It is not every day you find the word “twerk” in a gubernatorial proclamation, but Governor Jay Inslee issued a proclamation for New Orleans Bounce Day on June 1, 2019.
Seattle Twerkshop will commemorate this honor throughout the week with both free and paid events. They will begin by holding free twerk workshops at the Pacific Northwest Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center. The free workshops for the public are May 25 at 11 am and May 26 at 1 pm. They will give a free New Orleans Bounce Performance on May 26 at 6 pm on the Open-Air Stage. On June 1, they will hold a New Orleans Bounce Day Party at 10 pm in Ballard at Copious Productions.
With the United Nations declaring 2015 to 2024 the Decade of People of African Descent, the culture of African descendants living outside of Africa are also celebrated. Dance and music based on African and Mardi Gras traditions developed in New Orleans. This style gave rise to the word “twerk” and later the dance phenomenon across the world.
In the state of Washington, that tradition continued with Tricia Diamond and Seattle Twerkshop, a troupe which has conducted New Orleans Bounce fitness classes and performances at non-profit and for-profit events. The group has performed at Pride and Pacific Northwest Folklife spreading cultural knowledge and love of the music and this dance style from New Orleans.
To commemorate New Orleans Bounce Day, Seattle Twerkshop will host their first ever New Orleans Bounce Day Party at Copious Productions in Seattle, Washington.
