April 1st through April 14th

On April 14th, Auctions at Showplace will present Selections from Important New York Estates, a sale featuring fine art, sculpture, furniture, silver, jewelry, decorative arts, and more from distinguished New York City addresses such as 1 Fifth Avenue, 1040 Park Avenue, 96 Fifth Avenue, and Level Club Condo at 253 West 73rd St. Additional selections come from the estates of Peter Knoll, Hugh Hardy, Margot Rogoff, and Elliott Lang.

Leading the sale is an impressive oil painting by Gerald Cassidy (American, 1879-1934) a Kentucky-born artist who studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, National Academy of Design and the Art Students League before relocating to New Mexico. One of the founding artists of the Santa Fe Art Colony, Cassidy would make the documentation of Native American life and culture his primary artistic mission. In this sale is a 30” x 40” desert scene depicting a figure with two horses finding shade underneath a lone tree. Other fine art includes Agustin Fernandez’ (Cuban, 1928-2006) “The Petite Skin Composition #3,” an Old Master School “Cupid and Psyche” oil on panel after Guido Reni, and an Alphonse Mucha Art Nouveau poster advertisement for Job cigarette rolling papers.

A strong lineup of furniture features a Joseph Schmitz Louis XV marble top bombé commode with kingwood veneer, a Renaissance Revival marble top console with carved figural supports, a George Smith open arm sofa, an Art Deco granite top single pedestal table, and a KEM Weber tubular chrome sofa. Complimentary sculpture comprises Alexander Falguière’s bronze "Le Vainqueur Combat au Coqs (Winner of the Cockfight)," an Art Deco “Leaping Antelope” bronze, and a modern black marble sculpture of a female torso.

A stylish array of jewelry includes an elegant pair of antique Qajari chandelier earrings in 18K Persian gold with three tiers of enamel flowers, dangling seed pearls and colored glass discs. Also to be offered are an Etruscan Revival 14K ram head bangle bracelet, a Cartier 18K yellow gold ‘Love’ bracelet, a Bulgari stainless steel ‘Serpent’ ladies’ wristwatch, a 14K white gold hinged bracelet with emeralds and pearls, and more.

Highlights in fine silver include a Buccellati five-piece tea service with Neoclassical manner decoration and a Buccellati ‘Torchon’ flatware service for twelve. Other silver includes a CJ Vander “Fiddle, Thread & Shell” flatware service for twelve, a Dominick & Haff “Louis XIV, Old Style” 69 piece partial flatware service, an assortment of Tiffany & Co. accessories, and more.

Collectors of nautical and maritime antiques will find a scale model of the RMS Caronia, a 1947 Cunard Line passenger ocean liner. Used by travel agents as a sales tool, the model features many fine details such as the ship’s swimming pool, lifeboats, etc. Also being offered is a selection of mid-century modern chrome sconces from the RMS Caronia itself, along with silverware, ephemera, and other related objects.

From a Philadelphia-area collection comes a fine assortment of Belle Epoque art glass including an elegant Thomas Webb “Passion Flower” vase, LC Tiffany favrile vases, and other works by Durand, Quezel, and Val St. Lambert. Strong offerings in art pottery include a selection of hanging wall plates by Argentinean born artist Susana Espinosa, Vallauris mosaic / neriage vessels by Jean Gerbino, and a group of eight limited edition Piero Fornasetti for Fleming Joffe “Recipe” plates featuring whimsical animal illustrations.

This exciting and eclectic sale also has a selection of ladies’ handbags and accessories including Hermes, Celine and Givenchy, a pair of Hutschenreuther vases produced in limited edition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pahlavi Dynasty, and a fantastic collection of Art Deco and mid-century modern lighting fixtures and other decorative arts.
